Bill de Blasio Deep in Thought
Bill de Blasio was elected mayor of New York City in 2014, and announced that he is running for president in 2020, in May 2019. Born Warren Wilhelm Jr., he took his mother’s maiden name in his 20s because his father, a heavy drinker who divorced his wife in Bill’s early childhood, was “largely absent” from his life. de Blasio is a graduate of New York University and Columbia University’s International School of Public Affairs. He has a long career in politics in and out of the government. de Blasio worked for the Department of Housing and Urban Affairs in the 1990s, during Bill Clinton’s presidency — under Andrew Cuomo, now the governor of New York. He went on to manage campaigns for politicians, including Hillary Clinton’s successful first Senatorial campaign in 2000. From there, he entered politics as a candidate, joining the NYC City Council, and becoming the city’s public advocate in 2010.
